In 2023, in a first-of-its-kind, The American Nurses Foundation’s Philanthropic Support for the Nursing Profession report, revealed that nursing receives just one penny of every healthcare philanthropy dollar despite broad awareness and agreement of the need for massive and urgent investment to unlock the full potential of nurses and the nursing profession to expertly, equitably and cost-effectively address increasing needs of access, affordability, and transformation of our complex health care systems. The health of every nation and person depends on nurses – and we are woefully and at our peril – underinvesting in nurses and nursing. In this series of rare, in-depth unscripted conversations with philanthropists, fundraisers, program managers, executive directors, grantees, and innovators we explore the creative, strategic, and evidence-based approaches to these investments; learn why, how, and who is investing in nurses and nursing; and why it’s so urgent. Let’s go! Episode Highlights:Tim's advice: Get out and make a change, find a business partner with complementary skills ("your Anoop", his co-founder)Origin story: Seeing limitations of existing NLP tools, partnering with NLP expert Dr. Anoop SarkarCutting-edge technology: Structuring massive volumes of unstructured medical data with advanced language AIPowerful use cases: Transforming needle-in-a-haystack data challenges, drastically reducing manual chart review workloadsFuture vision: AI-augmented healthcare teams over next 2-5 years, reducing burnout by automating drudgery tasksAbout our Guest: Dr. Tim O’Connell is a practicing radiologist in Vancouver and cofounded emtelligent in 2016. He has served as vice chair of medical informatics in the University of British Columbia’s Department of Radiology since 2017. Prior to his clinical and entrepreneurial careers, Dr. O’Connell worked as an IT professional for Nortel Networks and Bell, where he was director of engineering for the Bank of Montreal account.Early in his career, Dr. O’Connell realized that radiologists were often tasked with a volume of work that didn’t afford them the time needed to carefully review and understand each patient's clinical history. In 2015, he met Dr. Anoop Sarkar, a widely published Ph.D. and full professor of natural language processing (NLP) and artificial intelligence. Dr. Sarkar shared Tim’s interest in medical language processing and desire to develop meaningful solutions that would have a positive impact on the lives of patients and care providers. It quickly became obvious to both that they were perfectly matched to solve the problem Tim had identified, together bringing a powerful combination of deep clinical and data science expertise. emtelligent was officially formed when Drs. O’Connell and Sarkar joined forces with Jeff O'Connell, an experienced technology operations management leader; and Dan Carriere, a seasoned expert in building and scaling biomedical startup ventures, adding experienced entrepreneurship and business leadership to the team. Collectively, the team successfully built and launched emtelliPro®, one of the industry's first deep-learning-based Medical Language Understanding engines.Links Supporting This Episode:emtelligent Website: CLICK HEREDr. Tim O’Connell...

Takeaways
1. Defining your research question or objectives is crucial for guiding your search strategy and ensuring a focused, efficient literature review process. Before diving into your literature search, take the time to clearly articulate your research question or objectives using frameworks like PICO, SPIDER, or PEO.
2. Using a combination of keyword searches, subject heading/index term searches (like MeSH terms), and database filters can help you capture a wide range of potentially relevant sources while narrowing down your results. Familiarize yourself with the search functionalities and controlled vocabularies of databases like PubMed, and experiment with different combinations of keywords, subject headings, and filters to optimize your search results.
3. Leveraging citation management tools, note-taking techniques, and reporting guidelines can help you stay organized, maintain transparency, and produce a rigorous literature review. Explore and implement tools like EndNote, Zotero, or Mendeley for citation management, and develop a structured note-taking system (e.g., literature matrices or apps like Notion or Roam Research) to synthesize and report your findings effectively.
