Providing Emergency Services at Burning Man w/Kate Gonnella

Elyse talks with Kate Gonnella, Chief of Emergency Services at Burning Man, a yearly festival where close to 80,000 people gather in the Black Rock Desert, where temperatures can soar over 100 degrees during the day and dip below freezing at night. Kate's Emergency Services Department, along with the entire festival, is built from the ground up every year and fully dismantled just a few days later. Elyse and Kate talk about how she got involved in such a unique position, the challenges associated with running a team in a remote and temporary location, the planning that goes into construction of the department every year, and how listeners can learn more about volunteering. ACNL in Action is the podcast for anyone who wants to learn more about nursing, leadership, and everything in between. Presented by the Association of California Nurse Leaders, this podcast will introduce listeners to some of the most influential healthcare leaders in California and beyond.

Charlene Platon, MS, RN, FNP-BC, is Director of Ambulatory Nursing at Stanford Health Care and Chair of the ACNL Communication and Voice Committee.

Charlene’s overarching goal as a healthcare leader and nurse innovator is to discover new and creative solutions to improve care delivery and operations. She is passionate about utilizing innovation and interdisciplinary collaboration to address organizational challenges, transform healthcare, and empower nurses.

ACNL in Action is edited and produced by the Association of California Nurse Leaders. ACNL is the professional association for Nurse Leaders, consisting of approximately 1,200 nurse managers, nurse directors, chief nursing officers, nurse educators, and other professional nurses across California.

Founded in 1978, ACNL has spent over 40 years helping nurses advance their professional practice through continuing education, networking, and scholarship opportunities. ACNL’s overall purpose is to equip nurses to lead self, others and systems. ACNL works closely with other nursing organizations in California and throughout the nation.
