Maximizing Safe Home Mobility Access: Addressing one of the most important issues in stroke discharge and recovery with Justin Oakley of Oakley Home Access

Episode 62: Justin Oakley of Oakley Home Access Preparing your home for all of life's changes after a stroke can be overwhelming. In fact, the word discharge can be terrifying for both survivor, caregiver and treating therapists alike to provide access to continued safe mobility solutions. We’ve heard many times from past expert rehabilitation guests on our podcast that they predict ‘the future of stroke recovery will be in the home’. But that home must be safe and accessible first. So, how do we make it the best place to be? For the stroke survivor, this is not a nicety, it is a necessity and adapting for safe home access is one of the largest unseen issues in stroke recovery. In today’s episode we wanted to dive into this topic and offer solutions with a home access expert. [Did you know? Currently, according to AARP statistics, less than 5% of all US homes have features needed to support a safe and accessible (aging in place) home even though 80% or more older adults surveyed want to stay in their home as long as possible.]  About Our Episode 62 Guest We welcomed our expert guest Justin Oakley, OTR/L Co-founder and Chief Development Officer at Oakley Home Access. Justin is a registered & licensed Occupational Therapist as well an Executive Certified Home Modification Provider. Oakley Home Access can assist a wide array of community members ranging from stroke survivors needing home access accommodations, children with special needs to the elderly striving to age-in-place. Oakley Home Access will provide free home safety assessments and full service home modifications, ranging from removing area rugs to providing a variety of adaptive equipment to assist mobility throughout the home, including complete remodels.  Justin and his co-founding partner Mike Vieira (experienced contractor + CAPS certified) provide dual expertise (clinical + construction) that is unmatched and provides a unique educational piece that has become their secret sauce to success and foundation for plans for expansion. In this episode we explore how their education, empathy and energy are the key ingredients that keep their team’s core values aligned to help customers realize their goals for continued safe access and independence in their home.  Reach out to our guest at Oakley Home Access: https://www.oakleyhomeaccess.com/ Show Mentions: Join our Know Stroke News mailing list to get all of our latest (Taylor Swift) updates and search past issues here. #24 – Reimagining male contraception – L.R. Fox – NEXT Life Sciences

How would the world look like if men had the most efficient and reversible means of birth control? The outstanding work that L.R. Fox and his team at NEXT Life Sciences are leading might bring a very tangible answer to this question. Based on the pioneering work from Prof. Sujoy K. Guha and The Parsemus Foundation, they are developing one of the most promising male birth control methods medicine has ever known, under the name of Plan A. As an American citizen who has grown under the Foster Care program, Fox (as he likes to be called) has witnessed firsthand the dramatic consequences that unplanned pregnancies can have on individuals and their relatives in the long term. According to him, we have gone quite far already in terms of available options for women and men when it comes to birth control methods. But Plan A could be a revolution in the space, as it is completely hormone-free, painless to deliver and revert, and has an efficacy duration that is way beyond current standards. And most importantly, it can redistribute the heavy responsibility of family planning from women to men. In this episode, we talk about the science behind Plan A, where the technology comes from, how far is it from being available worldwide, and what it would change for society as a whole! A fascinating conversation with a visionary founder, deeply led by the purpose of fostering a positive impact in the world, and with a strong social approach to entrepreneurship! Timeline: 02:35 - Fox’s background and how he landed in the field of male contraception 06:16 - Experiencing firsthand the consequences of unplanned pregnancies 09:34 - The mission of NEXT Life Sciences 11:50 - The need, the science, and the functioning of Plan A 16:02 - How the Plan A procedure works and gets reverted 25:02 - Guaranteeing a 10-year efficacy claim 26:56 - Launching the first human clinical trials 33:55 - Making it accessible to the broadest population 38:17 - The philosophy of Fox and NEXT Life Sciences What we also talked about with Fox: Sexually transmissible diseases (STDs) Condoms Vasectomy Reversible inhibition of sperm under guidance (RISUG) Plan B Public benefit corporation We cited with Fox some of the past episodes from the series: #6 - Bringing back walking to paraplegics - Jocelyne Bloch - .NeuroRestore You can learn more about NEXT Life Sciences through their website, and feel free to follow their activities on LinkedIn! Escape the Ordinary: Unlocking Engagement with Escape Rooms

In today’s episode, I speak with nurse educator Martha Johnson MSN, RN, CEN, otherwise known as Breakout RN, about using active learning strategies to engage nursing students for whom it is also often challenging to connect theory to bedside practice, especially in the context of unique patient scenarios. As a new educator, Martha's first theory course was PowerPoint-heavy with a scripted lecture.  She started BreakoutRN to develop a learner-centered model and saw firsthand the improvements in student engagement and their ability to apply what they were learning to a clinical scenario. She encourages all nurse educators to embrace active learning while emphasizing that you don’t have to do it all at once, just take it one activity at a time.  Key Takeaways:1. Active Learning: Martha emphasizes that traditional lectures are not enough. Active learning strategies like escape rooms and card decks engage learners mentally, physically, and emotionally, enhancing both understanding and retention.2. The Nursing Process: This systematic approach to patient care involves assessment, problem identification, intervention planning, and evaluation. Martha's card decks are designed to guide students through this process in a simulated environment.3. Educational Escape Rooms: Unlike entertainment escape rooms, educational ones have clear objectives and are meant to apply previously learned knowledge. They also offer opportunities to practice skills and professional behaviors like teamwork and communication.4. Storytelling: Storytelling helps make learning stick in both in escape rooms and card decks. Real-world settings, clinical data, and even social determinants of health can add depth to the learning experience.6. Interdisciplinary Learning: Martha mentions that some simulations involve interdisciplinary teams, including law enforcement and paramedic students, to mimic real-world scenarios.Connect with MarthaLinkedInBreakout RNResourcesHrach S. You're about to uncover so much about how we can approach people in a more compassionate way with my friend, Danni Verona. Danni Verona is a Licensed Occupational Therapist who has been continuously serving the needs of families for 36 years. She specializes in infants, children and parenting and has gained her experience through working in schools, clinics, home visiting programs, and hospitals. As a mother of three children, a grandmother to a freshman in high school! Danni brings her love of learning and family into her experience. She is an Infant Massage program instructor, 5th degree Blackbelt Karate instructor and program director of a neurodiverse inclusive karate program she created through the Family Martial Arts Academy in Beaverton, and is a Certified Zero Balance practitioner.  Danni now practices in her private clinic, that she designed to supports children and their families specifically in how they can discover the best way to optimize their personal processing and regulation needs. Danni has developed tools and programs to support individuals in learning more about their body’s needs, as well as how their thinking and neurological processing impacts their ability to learn, regulate and interact with others.  Danni’s guiding philosophy is, “Working with the 'whole' child, means recognizing that they are whole, and it’s our job as the caretakers of children to meet their needs by seeing who they are, and where they are in their personal development. In order to do that we have to continue to learn about our own processing systems, so we can create the circumstances and support that allows the children to grow into their greatest potential."
