What Factors Should be Taken into Account in Designing ePROs – Electronic Patient Reported Outcomes Solutions?

Patient-reported outcomes (PROs) have become increasingly integral in healthcare for assessing the effectiveness of treatments from the patient's perspective. It sounds like a reasonable step in improving clinical research and care provision, but gathering data can be more difficult then you may think. It isn't easy to get to marginalized communities. There are language barriers in collecting data. There are cultural aspects that impact responses. So, how can you design useful electronic solutions for patient-reported outcomes? Hear from Mustafa Ali Syed, Researcher at the Manchester Academic Health Science Centre, The University of Manchester, and Ben James, Co-founder/Chief Design Officer at uMotif - ePRO, an engagement platform designed to power clinical and real-world research. Both are co-authors of a recently published paper titled Exploring the Cross-cultural Acceptability of Digital Tools for Pain Self-reporting. www.facesofdigitalhealth.com Newsletter: https://fodh.substack.com/ Show notes: 00:00:00 Why Do PROs Matter? 00:04:00 Evolution of Data Collection 00:06:00 Importance of Diversity in Clinical Trials 00:08:00 Ethnicity, Culture, and Pain Perception 00:12:00 The Role of Technology in PROs 00:14:00 Designing Inclusive Digital Solutions 00:20:00 Challenges in Engaging Targeted Populations 00:22:00 Language and Communication Barriers 00:26:00 The Future of PRO Research

Tuberculosis

Host: Darryl S. Chutka, M.D. [@chutkaMD] Guest: Zelalem Temesgen, M.D. It’s thought that a variant of tuberculosis originated in East Africa around 3 million years ago with the current strain of Mycobacterium tuberculosis dating back at least 20,000 years. Although easily spread from one person to another, not everyone infected develops active disease. The management of tuberculosis varies, and although there is a vaccine, it’s not commonly used in the U.S.  Effective pharmacologic treatment is available, however drug-resistant strains have presented challenges in some cases. This podcast is in recognition of World Tuberculosis Day, March 24, the day that Dr. Robert Koch reported Mycobacterium Tuberculosis. We’ll discuss the disease, it’s diagnosis and management with infectious disease specialist and Professor of Medicine, Zelalem Temesgen, M.D., from the Mayo Clinic. Do Collagen Supplements Help?

Another foray into the wide world of SUPPLEMENTS, friends! Let's talk COLLAGEN this time. What IS collagen? Well, in short, it's, uh... us. Collagen is the most abundant protein in your body. It accounts for about 30% of your body’s total protein.  It is the primary building block of your body’s connective tissues: skin, muscles, bones, tendons, ligaments, etc. So.. does consuming it (as marketed by supplement companies) actually IMPROVE any of those parts of you?? Or is this just another trick by the "wellness" industry to freak us out (even more) about bodily changes that the majority of human beings will experience, to some degree, in the normal course of aging? This week Jeremy presents a detailed dissertation on collagen consumption! Your Doctor Friends aim to answer all your collagen questions! What does the research suggest? Can we even absorb collagen by eating it in supplement form? Can it improve your skin? What about your joints? Does it make arthritis better? Is there a particular TYPE of collagen that has potential positive impact on our health? Is it crazy expensive?? Am I eating BONES?? (listen in to find out ;) Resources for today's episode include: The Cleveland Clinic's informational page about collagen. An article/lit review/meta-analysis from the American Journal of Translational Research evaluating the efficacy of undenatured collagen in knee osteoarthritis. An International Journal of Dermatology systematic review/meta-analysis on the effects of hydrolyzed collagen supplementation on skin aging. A systematic review/meta-analysis in Nutrients on the effects of oral collagen for skin anti-aging. A 2023 Cureus meta-analysis on hydrolyzed oral collagen supplementation on skin rejuvenation. A Nutrients study on type-2 chicken hydrolyzed collagen supplements to alleviate joint discomfort. A Washington Post article from 1/29/24 titled "Should I be taking collagen supplements?
