Dispatches from the Scarred Heart of Emergency Response

On episode 447 of The Nurse Keith Show nursing and healthcare career podcast, Keith interviews Jeremy Norton, an author and firefighter who has served the diverse communities of Minneapolis since the year 2000. In the course of their conversation, Keith and Jeremy discuss his new book, Trauma Sponges: Dispatches from the Scarred Heart of Emergency Response, which is a remarkable and brilliantly written memoir that examines the toll that the work of emergency response takes on those who embrace such a career. In Trauma Sponges, Norton also decries the sexism, racism, homophobia, misogyny, and toxic masculinity of the "old guard" of the firefighting world. He also describes in excruciating detail the death, suffering, pain, and heartbreak that he and his colleagues witness on a daily basis as they respond to the homes and streets of Minneapolis when citizens who dial 911 are having what is often the worst days of their lives amidst what Norton calls the "twin malignancies" of denial and despair. Norton also recounts his role in the attempt to resuscitate George Floyd following his brutal treatment by officers of the Minneapolis Police Department. He shares his observations of the societal patterns that continue to haunt our country and the Black men who are all too often on the receiving end of egregious, and often deadly, treatment at the hands of the police. A proud native of Washington, D.C., Jeremy Norton has lived in the Colorado mountains, the Tennessee mountains, and the Minnesota not-mountains. He taught middle- and high-school literature and has also taught at Minneapolis' Loft Literary Center. He has a strong stomach and a grim, capacious sense of humor. Why Wingwomen Took the Leap from Virtual Support to Real-World Care for Reproductive Health

When Adonica Shaw founded Wingwomen, it was to address a very specific, personal need. Shaw had experienced a difficult pregnancy – preeclampsia turned an otherwise healthy pregnancy into a medical emergency. Afterward she looked around and there was no one to talk to about what she’d been through and nowhere she felt she could go for advice. So she built a safe space to talk about issues around women’s health and maternal health. It was all virtual at first and provided curated communities of support. But one day Shaw realized that there were services she wanted to provide to her customers that just couldn’t be handled on an app. There were also services she wanted to provide that couldn’t get reimbursed without a physical component. So she made a leap that very few health tech founders make: she decided to open up a physical clinic. She found suitable space in South Boston, fitted it out to her specifications, and put out her proverbial shingle. As we discuss, in this StartUp Health NOW podcast episode, this has come with serious challenges. There’s a reason why many founders prefer SaaS business models over bricks and mortar. Dealing with local zoning, difficult neighbors, staffing... it’s a lot. But designing a physical space also allows Shaw to lay the foundation for a new way for women to get care and to support one another along the way. Let’s get into the conversation. 1 Patient. 2 Doctors. 2 Different Opinions

Medicine is a science and an art, and this means that doctors can have vastly different recommendations about how to treat a condition. This is the situation Brigid faced when she was admitted with a wildly abnormal heart rhythm. Whose advice did she follow? How did she decide?  Key Takeaway: Know the WHY Record conversations with your doctors, PAs, and nurses practitioners - especially if you are in a situation where you are seeing multiple providers and feeling overwhelmed.  Articulate your priorities. They can be financial, social, physical, cultural, spiritual. Only YOU can do this because priorities are personal. Do your homework when facing a medical decision instead of getting paralyzed by choices. Have your questions ready and demand to know the WHY behind each answer. Links 10-10-10 Rule for Decision-Making was developed by Suzy Welch.
