On episode 382, the second in a 2-part series of The Nurse Keith Show nursing and healthcare career podcast, Keith interviews Daniela Vargas, MSN, MPH, MA, RN, PHN; Ruth Francis, MPH, MCHES; and Cheryl Peterson, MSN, RN, all members of the National Commission to Address Racism in Nursing. In the course of this episode, Keith and his esteemed guests discuss the American Nurses' Association reckoning with its own structural racism, data from the commission's National Survey on Racism in Nursing, the commission's foundational report, and much more. On January 25, 2021, leading nursing organizations launched the National Commission to Address Racism in Nursing. The Commission examines the issue of racism within nursing nationwide focusing on the impact on nurses, patients, communities, and health care systems to motivate all nurses to confront individual and systemic racism. The Commission members and organizations represent a broad continuum of nursing practice, racially and ethnically diverse groups, and regions across the country. The Commission is led by the American Nurses Association (ANA), National Black Nurses Association (NBNA), National Coalition of Ethnic Minority Nurse Associations (NCEMNA), and National Association of Hispanic Nurses (NAHN).Before joining forces to address racism in nursing, the organizations that make up the National Commission to Address Racism (the Commission) have for years raised their individual voices to condemn all forms of racism within our society and health care system. Playing it Forward: From Master’s in Nursing to PhD in Psychology

Caroline has completed and defended her doctoral dissertation, titled “Play and its Effects on Burnout and Compassion Fatigue Among Healthcare Professionals”, and has a great deal to share about the journey. Formerly a dedicated oncology nurse, Caroline's vision is to serve as a play researcher and advocate, educator, clinical psychologist, and public speaker, as well as produce body and movement play retreats to guide women, breast cancer survivors, healthcare professionals, educators, nursing and medical students, and mothers all over the world to discover, explore, practice, protect, and share their unique creative expression through the sacred practice of play, with the hope of reawakening and fostering purpose, meaning, and authentic connection through shared joy. Gerontological Advanced Practice Nurses on the Forefront of Care

On episode 377 of The Nurse Keith Show nursing and healthcare career podcast, Keith interviews Dr. Natalie Baker, DNP, ANP-BC, GNP-BC, CNE, GS-C, FAANP, FAAN, the President of the Gerontological Advanced Practice Nurses Association (GAPNA), a national organization for advanced practice nurses caring for older adults. GAPNA is the premier professional organization that represents the interests of advanced practice nurses, other clinicians, educators, and researchers involved in the practice or advancement of caring for older adults. GAPNA members are active in academia, research, and a variety of settings across the health care continuum - including primary care, acute care, post-acute care, home care, and long-term care.  Across this broad spectrum, GAPNA provides opportunities for education, leadership, research, advocacy, networking, and the advancement of evidence-based care. Dr. Baker is an Associate Professor at UAB School of Nursing. She maintains a nurse practitioner practice at a rural long-term care facility in north Alabama. She has been recognized by the National Hartford Center of Gerontological Nursing Excellence as a Distinguished Educator in Gerontological Nursing. The Alabama State Nurses Association awarded her their annual teaching award in 2020 and in 2021, Dr. Baker was recognized by UAB School of Nursing as one of their 70 Visionary Leaders. Dr. Baker is a Fellow of the American Academy of Nursing and the American Association of Nurse Practitioners. Keith Carlson

I’ve been a nurse since 1996, and I’ve worked in a variety of clinical settings, including home health, community health, case management, public health, hospice, and nursing education. I’ve also held management and executive positions, including Chief Nursing Officer and Director of Nursing.

I’m a Board-Certified Nurse Coach (NC-BC) under the auspices of the American Holistic Nurses Credentialing Corporation. I also hold previous certifications in Swedish Massage, Kripalu Yoga, and Laughter Yoga. Previously, I studied the visual arts, dropping out of two Philadelphia art schools in the early 1980s.

My podcast, The Nurse Keith Show, was launched in January of 2015, and offers weekly nursing career advice, information, and inspiration for nurses and healthcare professionals who want to take their careers to the next level.
