Not Afraid to Ruffle Feathers: Kris’ Story (Part 2)

Each year, 400,000 hospitalized patients experience some type of preventable harm – and this does not include the near misses that don't result in a negative event. In Part 2, Kris kept a close eye on Dave's care even though he was stable, and she didn't hesitate to ruffle some feathers when preventable harm made her lose trust.  Key Takeaway: Keep advocating throughout the entire hospital stay. While doctors, nurses, and hospital staff try really hard to get things right, oversights and mistakes happen. When necessary, escalate. Calmly but persistently ask questions, demand answers and actions. If you ruffle some feathers, it's okay.  Losing trust in the medical care being delivered is stressful for everyone. Take action to get things back on track. Sometimes the only option is to transfer to another hospital.  Links:  Instagram:  https://instagram.com/speakupforyourhealth Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/speakupforyourhealth

How Does Ozempic Affect My Metabolism? (with Naomi Parrella, MD)

Discussion about Ozempic (semaglutide and other GLP-1 agonist medications) is EVERYWHERE. So many opinions! Your Doctor Friends know that sifting through mountains of information on a subject is HARD. Sometimes it helps to "ask a friendly expert", so that's exactly what we did for this episode. Quick plug/required pre-listening for this episode- Your Doctor Friends HIGHLY recommend you listen to the episode of Maintenance Phase on Ozempic- link to the podcast here! We welcome back our friend, and former guest of YDF, Naomi Parrella, MD. Dr. Parrella is a double board-certified physician in family medicine and obesity medicine. She is the Chief of Lifestyle Medicine at Rush University, the Medical Director for Rush University's Center for Weight Loss and Lifestyle Medicine, the Director of Strategic Planning and Implementation within the Department of Surgery and Associate Professor in both the Department of Family Medicine and the Department of Surgery. She was also our esteemed guest on EPISODE 3! (Back when we were still called "What The Health?!?" podcast! In this episode, Dr. Parrella helps us navigate the tough questions when it comes to new medications like Ozempic/Wegovy. We discuss some hot topics, including: What is insulin resistance? Can you be fat and metabolically healthy? Does having a "normal BMI"/being thin automatically make you metabolically healthy? What do the STEP trials and the SELECT trial really show us? What does that data mean? Can you take a medication like Ozempic for a short time "just to lose a little weight" and then stop? Should you expect to maintain that weight loss? What are the potential side effects/downsides of medications like Ozempic (GLP-1 agonists)? Why are these meds so damn expensive? Is it like that all over the world? Dr. Parrella recommends the following resources: "Why We Get Sick" by Benjamin Bikman, PhD. "Metabolical" by Robert Lustig, MD. "Brain Energy" by Christopher Palmer, MD. Replay: How to Gain Greater Perspective on Your Value When Your Patients Don’t Achieve Their Goals

Originally released Aug 17th 2021; In last week’s episode, I focused on how to overcome the feeling of guilt as a provider and some common themes around this topic were what to do when your patients aren’t seeing the results they hoped for? How do you overcome this new feeling of guilt and not attach your worthiness as a clinician to these situations?  In this week’s solo episode, I’m continuing this conversation around healthcare provider guilt and sharing insights & strategies on how to move through those feelings, especially when the outcomes aren’t what they wanted. I discuss why we base our self worth on results and why we should instead be focusing on the service provided.  Listen in to learn: How education and conditioning has impacted our idea of success  The three components of burnout and how guilt affects this  Basing your practice on service rather than outcomes An exercise to implement to see the big picture of your patients situation  Grab your drink of choice and join the conversation! Who not how – achieving your 2024 goals!

In this episode, I explore the concept of "who not how" and how it can help nurses achieve their goals. Instead of focusing on how to achieve a goal, it is more effective to find the right person or resource to help you reach that goal. I’m sharing my examples and stories to illustrate the power of finding the right "who" and leveraging their expertise. This concept is inspired by the book "Who Not How?" by Dr. Benjamin Hardy and Dan Sullivan. The book's central idea is finding the right individuals to help you reach your goals. Once you find the right "who" – a mentor, coach, or colleague – they can guide you, provide accountability, and help you uncover the "how".Focusing less on the "how" and more on the "who" can be a game-changer in achieving goals, especially for nurses. It helps us leverage collective expertise, regulate our mindset, and accelerate our progress. So, as you set your sights on your goals for 2024, consider looking for your "who" to help uncover the "how".Key takeaways:03:30 The Book "Who Not How" by Dr. Benjamin Hardy and Dan Sullivan04:38 Using the "Who Not How" Mindset in a Leadership Role08:26 Impact of Disconnection in the Nursing Community10:49 Achieving Goals through Neuroplasticity and Accountability12:07 The Importance of Finding the Right Support in Nursing14:46 Leveraging Collective Expertise to Achieve Nursing Goals22:47 Holding Yourself Accountable and Having a Future-Focused Vision in Nursing24:22 Success Story of Helping a Nurse Transition to a Work-From-Home Position26:00 Leveraging Someone's Expertise to Save Time and Achieve Goals28:56 Personal Example of Leveraging Someone's Expertise to Save Time29:57 Importance of Finding the Right "Who" in Nursing Careers and LeadershipWant to land your graduate nursing role with ease?Didn't land your grad? Harm Reduction in the Context of Interactions with Law Enforcement – Part 1

In a special collaboration, the Pennsylvania Action Coalition joined forces with Kouvenda Media’s Obscured Journalism Initiative last year to host a thought-provoking panel discussion on law enforcement interactions within the community and the implementation of a harm reduction care model. Our partners at Obscured captured the insights of our distinguished panelists in two parts, each shedding light on the diverse facets of harm reduction and effective strategies for addressing trauma resulting from interactions with law enforcement. In this episode, we hear from Talitha Smith, a nurse navigator with the Allegheny Health Network’s Center for Inclusion Health Clinic, RIvER (Rethinking Incarceration and Empowering Recovery). Talitha shares her insights about harm reduction and her passion for RIvER’s unique programming, which rapidly, effectively, and compassionately addresses the health needs of individuals post-release from incarceration.  Following Talitha's insights, we delve into the experiences of Chad Bruckner, a retired police detective who now owns and oversees a private investigator firm and is a coach and recovery specialist. Closing the discussion is Laurie A. Corbin who is the Managing Director for Community Engagement at Public Health Management Corporation (PHMC). She oversees a range of programs that provide social services, prevention, intervention, treatment, and education to at-risk individuals and their families.
