Overcoming Weight Bias: A Clinical Psychologist’s Perspective

Is obesity a mental health issue? Is it “right” for people to take the new obesity drugs if they aren’t obese but simply want to lose weight? This episode is not a patient story, but the perspective and experience of a clinical health psychologist who specializes in eating and weight-related issues. Dr. Robyn Pashby talks about the vicious shame-blame cycle of obesity and how patients have autonomy when discussing weight with their doctor. Key Takeaways: Erase a FAULT mindset. Yes, obesity is complex…but it's not someone's fault. Shaming and blaming yourself – or others – simply makes it worse. This bias is embedded in our society, but you have control of your own mindset. Ask for consent. Robyn talked about the importance of clinicians asking permission from patients before talking to them about their weight. But, asking for consent also applies when you approach a friend, a sibling, a parent, a spouse, or even your child who is struggling with weight or body image issues. Ask their permission and be ready to accept and respect “no” as an answer. When to Refer a Patient for a Heart Transplant

Host: Darryl S. Chutka, M.D. [@chutkaMD] Guest: Drew N. Rosenbaum, M.D. The first heart transplant patient survived only 18 days as the early attempts of heart transplantation were plagued by immune rejection of the transplanted organ. Today, thanks to the many advances in organ transplantation, heart transplant patients typically lead productive lives for years. 75% of heart transplant patients live at least 5 years and nearly 85% return to work. Who’s a candidate for a heart transplant? How long do patients typically wait for a heart transplant and when should we think about a heart transplant for our patients? These are questions I’ll be asking my guest, Drew N. Rosenbaum, M.D., a cardiologist from the Mayo Clinic. The topic for this podcast is “When to Refer a Patient for a Heart Transplant” in honor of 'National Donate Life Month'. Are Microplastics Slowly Killing Us?

What does the term "microplastics" mean to you? Why is seemingly everyone talking about them lately?  A new study published on March 6th in the New England Journal of Medicine titled, “Microplastics and Nanoplastics in Atheromas and Cardiovascular Events" has been circulating around the internet, and raises concerns about the risk of exposure to microplastics and long-term adverse health outcomes. What does this study suggest? What does the other data about microplastics show? Our exposure to plastics is ubiquitous; its in our packaging, our clothing, in our air and water. The chemical additives used in plastics manufacturing are also worrisome, as they have demonstrated adverse health effects in animal models. As we have hammered home in many prior episodes, DOSE and EXPOSURE matter when it comes to risk of harm from a particular substance. The same rules seem to apply for microplastics. In today's episode, Jeremy explains what we do and don't know about the risks of long term exposure to microplastics. He ends with some actionable items on how you can choose to limit your exposure with some simple daily behavioral changes. Resources for this episode include: The very recent NEJM article titled "Microplastics and Nanoplastics in Atheromas and Cardiovascular Events". A 2022 Frontiers in Endocrinology study regarding endocrine changes in mammals related to exposure to micro/nano plastics. A May 2023 article from National Geographic titled "Microplastics are in our bodies. How much do they harm us?" A March 19th, 2024 Everyday Health article on microplastics.
