Nutrition & Cardiovascular Health

Host: Darryl S. Chutka, M.D. [@chutkaMD] Guests: Stephen Kopecky, M.D. Guest: Tara Schmidt, M. ED, RDN, LD It’s a well-accepted fact that diet plays a significant role in the development as well as prevention of cardiovascular disease, a major cause of morbidity and mortality in the U.S. The typical U.S. diet results in a predisposition to obesity, hypertension, and hyperlipidemia; all risk factors for cardiovascular disease.  Fortunately, diet is a potentially reversible risk factor. As health care clinicians, its our responsibility to assess our patients’ diet and make recommendations for a healthy food intake to reduce their risk of cardiovascular disease. The topic for this podcast is nutrition and cardiovascular health and my guests include preventive cardiologist Stephen Kopecky, M.D., and registered dietician and nutritionist Tara Schmidt, both from the Mayo Clinic.   https://www.usdairy.com/about-us/national-dairy-council Connect with the Mayo Clinic’s School of Continuous Professional Development online at https://ce.mayo.edu/ or on Twitter @MayoMedEd.

Are Food Allergies Exploding? Digesting the Data (with David Stukus, MD)

Food allergies are super common. According to the American College of Asthma and Immunology and the CDC, about 5% of kids and about 4% of adults are affected by food allergies. The allergic reactions can range from mild to severe and life threatening. Food allergy symptoms are most common in babies and children, but they can appear at any age. You can even develop an allergy to foods you have eaten for years with no problem (bummer). As we learned in our previous episode about Celiac Disease with Dr. Alessio Fasano, when we restrict people’s diets, it can create a really stressful and isolating situation for them. How can we support people with food allergies? Can we treat the allergies? Are food allergies actually more prevalent now than they have been historically? Thankfully, we have our friend and renowned expert in the field of Allergy and Immunology to help us understand more!   Welcome, Dave Stukus, MD! Dr. Stukus (DR. DAVE!!) is a Clinical Professor of Pediatrics, Division of Allergy/Immunology Nationwide Children's Hospital and The Ohio State University College of Medicine. He’s also the director of the Food Allergy Treatment Center. He’s very active on social media with @AllergyKidsDoc on Twitter and Instagram. Replay: Treating Disease Progression with DTx: Dr. Mark Berman Shares Insights on Innovative Prescription Digital Therapeutics

Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is an evidence-based form of therapy that has been in use for decades. My guest in this episode believes that CBT can be applied to create better therapeutics, and, in fact, that’s exactly what his company is called: Better Therapeutics. Dr. Mark Berman, the Chief Medical Officer at Better Therapeutics, explained that the goal of CBT is to “help people change some of those core beliefs, which then directly influence what we do on a day to day basis.” And while CBT was originally applied to help people with conditions like PTSD, anxiety and depression, the team at Better Therapeutics have developed their own variant of CBT to apply the core principles of CBT to the ideas that drive root behaviors like diet, exercise and other supportive lifestyle behaviors. Tune into this episode to hear how Better Therapeutics are creating new digital treatments to reverse the progression of cardiometabolic disease, improve quality of life and inform clinical decisions. In this episode, we cover: Patient experience using digital therapeutics for type 2 diabetes Nutritional CBT – Better Therapeutics innovative new form of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy Why companies are opting to create Prescription Digital Therapies rather than self-managed lifestyle apps What’s next in the Better Therapeutics pipeline and how these decisions are made The future of Digital Therapeutic infrastructure Guest Links and Resources: Connect with Mark Berman on LinkedIn | Twitter Visit bettertx.com Host Links: Connect with Eugene Borukhovich: Twitter | LinkedIn Connect with Chandana Fitzgerald, MD: Twitter | LinkedIn Connect with YourCoach.health: Website | Twitter Check out Shot of Digital Health with Eugene and Jim Joyce: Website | Podcast App HealthXL: Website | Twitter | Join an Event Season 2 of Digital Therapeutics Podcast would not be possible without the support of leading DTx organizations. Doctors Make Mistakes. If You Think Something’s Not Right… .Say Something

A young college student needed contraception. She'd done her research, was sure about her preferences and adamant about what she wanted. Her doctor agreed but almost made a mistake that would have resulted in long-term side effects.  A few years later, she was just as adamant about her pregnancy delivery preferences.  Key Takeaway: See Something…Say Something •  Advocacy starts with knowledge. Ask your doctor 3-5 good questions…and make sure they get answered. •   Always always(!) consider the risk of any procedure or medication. Also consider the risk of NOT doing the procedure or taking the medication. •  If you notice something that may be a mistake…speak up.
