A Personal Perspective: Changing the Way We Treat Patients, with Rebecca Deyo
In this week’s episode, I am joined by Rebecca Deyo, a practicing chiropractor in Grand Rapids, MI with a huge passion for improved patient communication and putting patients first.
Rebecca is a Palmer College of Chiropractic graduate, who completed most of her training at a VA Medical Center on the east coast. Her experience revealed communication gaps in healthcare professional programs, fueling her passion to help others improve patient communication and overall practice regardless of their specialty or experience level. Alongside seeing patients in private practice, she runs a podcast called Better Doctor Project and is actively involved in volunteer work through the American Chiropractic Association. Rebecca frequently speaks to chiropractic classes and programs about the importance of patient communication and having difficult conversations for optimal patient experiences and outcomes.
Her podcast, launched in 2019, addresses overlooked healthcare discussions during training, such as conducting an appropriate physical examination on a Muslim woman, responding to a patient with suicidal thoughts, and achieving better work-life balance as a resident. Her aim is to elevate these conversations, facilitating cross-learning among healthcare providers to better prepare for any patient interaction.
Tune in to this week’s episode to learn:
- Her own personal story of how a healthcare provider touched her life at a difficult time in her healing journey
- How a patient’s story inspired her to become a chiropractor
- Why it’s so important to integrate healthcare right now and the value of collaborating with other providers
- Tips for providers struggling with burnout, fatigue, or work-life balance
- An event in her own journey transformed the way she approaches patient care in her practice
