NURSES NEED TO TALK ABOUT THE TRAUMA: opening up and sharing nurse stories from the frontlines
Nurse Alice tells her heartbreaking experience of working a COVID shift in a hard-hit community hospital. The experience still gives her chills to this day. Later, she interviews filmmaker and TedX Speaker Alec Fischer about his film project highlighting nurse’s stories from the frontlines.
Titled “Covid Confessions,” the series showcases raw personal stories from people in the most hard-hit professions, and the second episode focuses exclusively on nurses. Interviewees are notably emotional as they discuss PPE shortages and allocation, their frustrations with medicine, science, and mask-wearing being politicized, confronting patients’ mistrust in the medical community, managing rapidly changing policies and procedures within their units, and their deep love of helping others and what drives them to continue to face the pandemic head-on. Among others, we hear stories from:
- Lindsey: a surgical nurse who arrived at work one day and was told her unit was now going to be a COVID-19 unit
- Patience: A DNP/Nursing Faculty member and single mom who was very afraid of contracting COVID and what it would mean for her children
- Shareef: a Cardiology nurse working with COVID patients, whose daughter is high risk
- Domenica: an Emergency Room nurse who is on her 12th of 13 straight shifts and is picking up extra shifts to help out
