Nurse Who Uses A Wheelchair Shares Her Inspirational Story (with Andrea Dalzell, The Seated Nurse)
Getting through nursing school and passing the NCLEX is already hard on its own. Now imagine doing it with a disability and experiencing discrimination every step of the way from nursing faculty, clinical sites, and potential employers. More than 1 billion people in the world openly have disabilities, and still, so many more don’t publicly acknowledge them.
In this episode Nurse Alice talks with Andrea Dalzell aka The Seated Nurse, a registered nurse, healthcare advocate, disability rights influencer, speaker, and most importantly, a survivor. Andrea candidly shares some of the many obstacles she encountered in nursing school, how she got through them, and the 76 interviews she had after graduation before her first clinical position as a registered nurse and wheelchair user. Fast forward to today, Andrea is still on a mission and is now the founder of an organization, The Seated Position, focused on helping those with disabilities have access to education and courses to enter the professional workspace.
