102: Healthier Policies for Healthier People
While not always obvious, the invisible hand of policy is ever-present, shaping our lives, and impacting our health. Much of a nation’s most significant disparities and inequities are rooted in policy decisions that, intentionally or unintentionally, limit access to healthcare, education, transportation, nutrition, childcare and more. The good news: Policy is also one of the most impactful avenues for driving progress toward the health and wellbeing of every citizen. In this episode, we meet nurse Vincent Guilamo-Ramos, PhD, MPH, LCSW, RN, executive director of The Institute for Policy Solutions at the Johns Hopkins School of Nursing, a new institute working to redesign the US healthcare system with the goal of shifting policy and practice to more preventive, value-based and whole-person care. Based in Washington, D.C., right down the street from the U.S. Capitol, Guilamo-Ramos shares the Institute’s mission of teaching, research, and convening, and its deep commitment to social welfare, social justice, and public health, as well as the essential role nurses play in shaping solutions, policy, and systems to improve health for every community and every citizen.
