381: Money Series: Why I DIDN’T Accept Loan Forgiveness the First Time Around

Student loan forgiveness feels like a no-brainer right? You spent all this time and money to obtain a degree that will directly impact the lives of others, why wouldn’t you want to accept the loan forgiveness programs that exist to help reduce your financial burden?

For me accepting loan forgiveness the first time would have been adding another set of golden handcuffs to my wrists.

I was already heavily burned out and it was affecting my life and family. When I was approached about student loan forgiveness by our administrators, I had a gut feeling that I shouldn’t accept. So I turned it down to the dismay and confusion of the entire leadership staff.

That was one of the best decisions I have ever made. I would have felt obligated to stay there and I would have drowned in an unmanageable workload. I would have never started my business. This podcast wouldn’t exist. I would have been stuck.

This time around when loan forgiveness was offered, I accepted it. I have finally found my place in this industry and in the medical community and it felt right to accept.

All of this is to say that it’s important to listen to your gut feelings. Both in practice and in life, your gut is a smart bitch that’s looking out for you and your patients. Don’t discount those feelings!

“Golden handcuffs are the things that are so shiny and so pretty but yet keep us locked into bondage.” Dr. Errin Weisman

[05:08] I would have also lost my autonomy.

[05:40] I share my definition of golden handcuffs.

[07:42] I actually just applied for loan forgiveness with my new practice.

[08:09] Remember to always trust your gut.

[10:53] “We have to know that intuition is there and it’s a tool we can use.”

[11:32] Thank you for listening and the 4th installment will be coming your way soon.
