211: Burnout Climb-Out with Dr. Brian Young
When you have as impactful a conversation as this one, it doesn’t matter if the person is male or female; it must be shared. Which is why I’m doing another Patreon exclusive episode. Listen as Dr. Brian Young shares his journey with burnout, and if you want to hear the entire story, stop on over and check out the Patreon group.
Dr. Young struggled with burnout before it even had a name. He came out of a surgical residency feeling completely overwhelmed and questioning whether he wanted to even be a doctor. There were some twists and turns from there but he ended up working as a doctor in the E.R. and his burnout intensified from there.
Since this was before burnout was a recognized problem in the medical community, Dr. Young didn’t know where to turn to get help, so he turned to the bottle. He began drinking at all times during the day and night and was even going to work under the influence.
When someone smelled alcohol on him, the hospital required that he attend AA or he would lose his license.
Listen in to hear all about his story and why being caught under the influence at work ended up being one of the best things that ever happened to him. He’s doing great work these days and is still working in the medical field, but no longer as a doctor. Instead, he’s making doctor’s lives easier through informatics.
