That’s ok, we can help. Here’s the technical definition:
pod·cast /ˈpädˌkast/ noun. a free digital audio file that can be downloaded or streamed over the internet to a web browser or smartphone app.
But…here’s what they are in reality:

A bit of background
The word was first coined by Ben Hammersley in a 2004 Guardian newspaper article where he reviewed this booming new medium. Borrowing the term ‘pod’ from Apple’s ‘iPod’ and ‘cast’ from radio ‘broadcast’.
As it turns out, the term ‘Podcast’ stuck (it is a bit sticker than ‘Audioblogging’ and ‘GuerillaMedia’ – two other names he proposed in the article). Podcasts have burst onto the stage, and they’re not just for iPods anymore.
Here’s what podcasts are today
On Demand – meaning they can be listened to on your schedule. Just click and listen whenever you like.
Downloadable – so you can take them with you on your smartphone, tablet or desktop when you are not connected – which makes them perfect for busy professionals who are traveling, commuting, and on the go!
Distributed – podcasts can be accessed on everything from Alexa and Google Home to your Apple and Samsung phones. This also means that podcasts can reach audiences around the world – delivering content 24/7/365 to anyone with an internet connection.
App-ified – (we don’t really think that’s a word, but you get the point). Every Android and Apple phone comes with a built-in podcast app, and there are loads of other apps where podcasts can be consumed. Spotify, iHeartRadio, TuneIn, Stitcher – just to name a few.
In addition, listeners can easily ‘subscribe’ to podcasts by clicking on the subscription buttons inside their favorite apps. That way, when a show releases a new episode, subscribers are automatically notified and, if selected, automagically downloaded for later listening.
