Tyshawn Toney, MHA, LSSGB Program Manager, Patient Safety
Tyshawn is the Patient Safety Program Manager for Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP). Since joining the organization in 2014, he has achieved success in initiatives such as project managing the development of the (at the time) newly constructed Medical Behavioral Unit, supporting enterprise-wide improvement projects aimed at the reduction of non-labor expenses, redesigning urgent direct admission processes, developing the ambulatory patient safety structure, and improving efficiency in the Perioperative Complex among many other activities.
Currently, his work includes project managing the development of the enterprise safety and quality strategy, optimizing utilization across specialty care sites, managing action items resulting from safety analysis, and involvement in many other efforts geared toward advancing the CHOP culture of safety. Tyshawn is a member of the 13-person Solutions for Patient Safety (SPS) Ambulatory Foundations group which is actively developing a framework for ambulatory patient safety to be utilized by many of the 100 children’s hospitals that are members of the organization.
Tyshawn holds a bachelor’s degree in Health Policy & Administration and a master’s degree in Health Administration from The Pennsylvania State University. Prior to joining The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, Tyshawn worked in Performance Improvement at Barnabas Health-Jersey City Medical Center as a Data Manager and Quality Initiative Coordinator. Across these roles, he spearheaded hospital reporting activities and facilitated the development/execution of key strategic initiatives for the mid-sized, urban health system.
Tyshawn is also the Chapter President for the National Association of Health Services Executives (NAHSE) – Delaware Valley Chapter and a board member at Broad Street Ministries (BSM). His professional areas of interest include operations management, strategic planning and implementation, diversity & inclusion, and organizational development.
